This Community of Learning is a collaborative professional learning initiative designed to strengthen field education through structured professional development, reflective supervision, and continuous quality improvement. This initiative supports practicum instructors across participating universities and community organizations while fostering stronger partnerships between academic institutions and community-based practice settings.

The first workshop in the Community of Learning series lays the foundation for the practicum instructor role — clarifying what the role asks of you and how to set up a learning experience that supports students from the start.

Facilitated by Ebony Hutchinson, MSW, LCSW

The first workshop will take place in the Berges Family Foundation Conference Center (Delmar DivINe, 5501 Delmar Blvd).

What this first workshop will cover

  • The practicum instructor’s role as educator, mentor, and professional role model
  • Adult learning principles and how they shape effective supervision
  • Structuring learning agreements
  • Creating psychologically safe, inclusive supervision environments

Practicum instructors take on one of the most important roles in professional education — shaping how students learn to actually do the work — often with little formal preparation for it. And most of the professional development meant to support them arrives as a single training that fades just as fast.

What can you expect to get out of your involvement?

  • Greater confidence in the instructor role
  • Stronger reflective supervision and feedback skills
  • Tools for supporting diverse learners
  • A cross-organizational professional network
  • Supervisory practices you can apply immediately — not just discuss
